A guide to fitting loft insulation which can save you money by cutting your energy bill.
How do you install loft insulation?
- You may qualify for a government or council grant to have your loft insulated so check with your local council.
- Make sure you’re wearing protective clothing with thick gloves, and wear a mask whenever handling the insulation material. Insulation is dangerous when it comes in contact with the skin or when inhaled so make sure you are properly protected.
- Simply unroll the insulation material (with a minimum thickness of 200mm/8 inches) in between the joists over the floor of your loft. Lay it over the joists too if you have enough insulation material.
- Ensure you don’t insulate below the cold water tank, and try not to compress the insulating material as this reduces it’s effectiveness.
- Replace the walk boards after you’ve laid the insulation.
What different loft insulation materials are there?
Fibreglass/Mineral Fibre Matting Roll
Mineral fibre or fibreglass matting is usually available in rolls 400mm (16in) wide, and thicknesses range from 100mm to 200mm (4 to 8 inches). Fibreglass roll insulation is the easiest to fit for the novice DIYer.
Loose Fill Loft Insulation Materials
Loose fill loft material that is sprayed into place is usually made from mineral wool or cellulose fibres, and should only be installed by a professional as it is a specialist job. The thickness should be the same as with roll insulation, at least 200mm/8 inches deep.
You can buy DIY loose fill insulation material in bags and it is usually made from mineral fibres or vermiculite, which is excellent for filling in gaps in hard to reach places. When using DIY loose fill insulation material, make sure you take the necessary safety precautions (wear protective clothing with thick gloves, and a face mask).
Safety
- Insulation materials can irritate the throat and skin, and should be installed with care.
- Wear a suitable dust mask to avoid throat irritation.
- Wear protective gloves to prevent irritation to your hands.
- Wear a long-sleeved top and trousers, even if it is a hot day.
- Only open the insulation package or bag in the loft, and keep the loft hatch or door closed.
- Work with the materials gently to prevent the fibres getting in the air.
- Bag up any waste in the loft before moving it through the house.
- Wash your clothes and gloves separately from your normal wash after you’ve finished, and dispose of the face mask.
