How can I get a government green grant to improve my home’s energy efficiency?
Making improvements to your home to lower your CO2 (carbon dioxide) output can be expensive, but there are a number of government grants available to help you financially.
Government grants of up to £2,700 per household (that are on certain benefits) are available to improve the heating and energy efficiency in your home.

There are 3 groups in the UK that distribute these grants.
- Warm Front energy efficiency grants (England)
- Warm Homes (Northern Ireland) energy efficiency grants – Freephone 0800 181 667
- Warm Deal energy efficiency grants & Central Heating Programme energy efficiency grants (Scotland)
- Home Energy Efficiency Scheme green grants (Wales)
The eligibility for each of the schemes varies, with grants available to people over a certain age or people on certain benefits.
Below is an example of the Warm Front energy efficiency grant (England) scheme criteria.
If you own your own home or rent it from a private landlord and if:
You are 60 years or older and are in receipt of one or more benefits. Benefits include: income support, council tax benefit, housing benefit, job seekers allowance and pension credit.
The new Carbon Emission Reduction Target (CERT) has been set for energy suppliers with a certain number of customers, they are now required to help improve home energy efficiency.
Contact your energy supplier and ask about grants or current offers available for energy efficiency improvement in your home.
Local authorities can also provide grants and special offers for local residents to install energy efficient systems and products in their homes, get in touch with your local authority for more information.
