Living a green lifestyle – What is a scuppie?

With the arrival of more widespread eco awareness, we, the consumer, find ourselves in new territory.

On the one hand, flash cars, slick shoes and a designer bag may make us feel good, but on the other we’re all becoming only too aware the impact our habits may be having on the environment.

Striking the balance is now the way forward for a rising number of people, where our conciousness of the need to go green is changing the way we consume.

From the greener cars to buying organic food with recycled carrier bags, this group is finding a way to lead a life with the level of luxury they’re accustomed to, but with more of a focus on the way mother nature wants us to behave…

This group has been coined – the Scuppies – socially conscious yuppies, mixing modern city style and old school eco worrying. American Chuck Failla came up with this term, and is soon to release a book on the subject, to be entitled The Scuppie Handbook.

Living as a scuppie entitles you to be a kind of flashy green, buying clothes from Howies, People Tree and Terra Plana. Celebrities who fit into this lifestyle bracket could include Stella McCartney, Anita Roddick, Coldplay’s Chris Martin and even the likes of David Cameron.

Failla says that you’ll never see a scuppie strap themself to a tree, they’d rather order an organic coffee in a Starbucks. This green lifestyle movement will continue to grow, especially as the corporations begin to offer a greener option to consumers. In short, you’re not alone…
