Tips and advice on recycling around the office
- Dispose of light bulbs, fluorescent tubes and printer cartridges correctly, and recycle where possible.
- It takes less energy to produce recycled printer cartridges than to make new ones so buy them where possible. Whilst they don’t last quite as long as new ones, they are cheaper to it all evens out and there is less waste.
- Try not to print emails or documents if you’re able to review them on a PC, this reduces the amount of paper and printer ink that is used.
- Communicating via phone and email instead of sending letters is far better for the environment and is a great way of keeping a good audit trail, so it benefits your business and the environment!.
- Keep wasted paper as scrap and use it for doing draft prints and writing notes instead of using new paper.
- Have recycling bins for any waste paper that can’t be reused as scrap, and add recycling bins for cans and plastic bottles.
- The ‘print preview’ feature in most computer software lets you check how your document will look without needing to print it. This is usually found on the printing menu (when the ‘print’ button is!) If you have to print something then choose a draft quality setting, which can usually be found in the print menu.
- Avoid using fax cover sheets, and add contact details to the top of the first page of the document instead.
- Use mugs or paper cups instead of plastic cups.
- Car sharing is a great way of greatly reducing your impact on the environment and it cuts your costs too! For half the week you could sleep on the journey to work!
- Trains use much less energy that planes, try and travel by train to business trips where you can.
