Have you got a G-rated or lower efficiency boiler?
Installing an efficient heating system is an extremely effective way of reducing your energy bills and CO2 emissions.
The UK’s CO2 reduction targets are some of the toughest in the world, and domestic heating accounts for 14 per cent of those CO2 emissions.
To help meet these targets, the Government is offering up to 125,000 households £400 towards the cost of upgrading to a high efficiency SEDBUK A-rated boiler or a renewable heating technology if a G-rated boiler or worse is currently installed in your home.
There are currently around three and a half million homes in England with the very least efficient type of boiler (G-rated or worse), if you think or know you have one then you should definitely consider applying for a grant.
Boiler Replacement
SEDBUK A-rated boilers have seasonal efficiencies of 90 per cent or more. This means they use less fuel, which lowers your running costs and CO2 emissions. So, by upgrading your G-rated boiler to an A-rated one, your household heating bill should drop by up to a quarter which equals a saving of around £240 per year for a 3 bedroom home.
Are You Eligible For The Boiler Scrappage Scheme?
- If you are a householder in England (a homeowner or rental tenant) then you are eligible!
- Under 60 years old? The boiler you are scrapping needs to be in working order and should be the main boiler used to heat the home.
- Over 60 years old? You can apply for the scheme, whether the boiler you are scrapping is in working order or not. It should still be the main boiler used to heat the home.
The scheme is only running in England. Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland aren’t eligible unfortunately. Similar schemes are yet to be decided by their respective governments (due to the devolution of power).
Your G-rated Boiler
If your boiler has a permanent pilot light then it is very likely that you have a G-rated boiler. If it is gas fired and over fifteen years old then it is also likely to be eligible. Oil fired boilers are also likely to be eligible if they are over 20 years old.
Search our Boiler Model Directory to find out what your boiler’s SEDBUK rating is.
Registering For Your Discount
If you believe that your home has a G-rated or worse boiler and want to register for the scheme to get your £400 cashback voucher towards the cost of upgrading to an A-rated boiler then first you must arrange a boiler installation quote.
If you are using a locally chosen installer then get a quote, and complete the online form or call Act on CO2 on 0800 512 012.
When will the vouchers be issued?
Vouchers are valid for 12 weeks from when they are issued. If the voucher is not redeemed within the 12 weeks then it will be cancelled and reallocated (there are only 125,000 discount vouchers available).
Make sure you don’t do the installation until you have received your discount voucher, or you will not be eligible.
The installation of a gas boiler must be carried out by an installer registered with Gas Safe. Installation of oil or biomass boilers or heat pumps must be carried our by an installer registered with a competent person’s scheme (such as OFTEC or HETAS).
Once you have received your voucher, you can get on with the installation. You will need to pay for the new boiler and installation, then you claim back the £400 by sending the voucher and invoice to the Government Scheme office as advised on the voucher.
