Green and eco book reviews
‘The Weather Makers’, by Tim Flannery, fills in a lot of the blanks about the what, why and how the environment is changing. There is a continual focus on the scientific rather than the emotional.
This reasoned approach should be commended, and it allows the reader to reach a more detached stance on the situation.
Flannery, a zoologist by trade, has a natural way of making the reader curious about his topic, and has a very astute wit in his writing, thus keeping hold of the reader.
He includes example after example of what’s going on somewhere in the world, and what the resultant effects are on the planet – and this approach keeps the book fresh to the final page.
Not only is the present and future of climate obviously a key focal point of The Weather Makers, but if you’re looking for a full history of environmental change – this is your place to start.
Given the scientific approach to his work, present and future trends are best established when compared with past results. The facts and figures about the climate changes at times make for chilling and compulsive reading.
For anyone who wants a factual-based run through on climate change, and what’s likely to come for us, this one is most definitely for you.
The book was also known as ‘We Are The Weather Makers’.
